I’m a native of Texas and I’ve never seen those before. They look like seashells constructed from dead leaves. You say caterpillar, so maybe it’s a cocoon?

 Yeah, they look like leaves, in an odd shape. It may very well be a cocoon.. but I can’t really find anything on Google that looks like them. Closest thing is maybe the Prometheus Moth.
